Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of R?sle Can OpenerCustomer Review: You get what you pay for Summary: 5 StarsIt took me a few times to get used to this can opener. My girlfriend picked it up immediately. It works perfectly every time, although you can't tell you're done opening until you feel the resistance (very little) let up. You can't see that it's open unlike conventional openers. At that time, I turn the handle in the opposite direction about a quarter turn and it lifts right off. I've spent years struggling with cans that were open 3/4 of the way open. That no longer happens. Go around one time, and that's it. I have to mention at my girlfriends request, that this opener doesn't bother her arthritic hands because the handle turns so easily and smoothly.
Customer Review: Pretty darn cool Summary: 5 StarsThis fancy can opener seemed like a frivolous luxury item... until our toddler got into the recycling and got her hand caught in an empty 8 oz. tomato sauce can with the partially attached lid folded into the can. Fortunately, she didn't get hurt (only upset at having a can for a hand for a few seconds). But, we wasted no time in getting this Fine Cooking magazine top-rated opener. After fumbling to open the first can, it's now second nature to engage this opener on most cans. Although the instructions that came tied to the opener handle are still there so house guests can use it too, this opener is easy to use, requires less effort than our conventional manual can opener, and is the first opener we reach for every time. It works on cans by basically disassembling the lid from the body. Neither the lid nor the mouth of the can are left with sharp edges.
Customer Review: small and light Summary: 4 StarsIt works great but getting the cut started is different from a "regular" opener and can take a bit of getting used to.
Customer Review: Mostly good but wouldn't buy again Summary: 3 StarsThe main advantage of this can opener is that it cuts a smooth opening at the top of the can instead of a jagged opening in the lid. If you've ever cut yourself on a can lid, you'll immediately realize the beauty of this difference. However, mine is difficult to use after about two years of three- or four- times weekly use. I have to push down hard to get it started. It often stops turning midway through a can, requiring the same procedure more than once per can. Turning the lever requires a lot of pressure as well. The problems are especially noticeable on smaller cans with a smaller sealing ridge on which the opener can latch. It's not as easy to operate as a standard grocery store Swing-a-way type opener. My hands are strong, but for someone whose aren't, the amount of pressure necessary to operate it would be a serious problem. A smaller issue is that the cut can lid is the same diameter as the can, so you can't put the lid inside the can for the recycling bin. My next can opener is going to be electric.
Customer Review: So Far, So Good...! Works Like A Dream... Summary: 5 StarsI've had the R?sle can opener for several weeks now, and so far it works great--just like everyone describes. Beautifully. I can't imagine the people that can't get it to work?! It seems rather intuitive to me, particularly when you read the instructions and see that to get it started that you actually have to turn the mechanism backwards for a tiny bit to lock it onto the can. After it does grip the can, it's smooth sailing...
I have been concerned about the reviews that mention these openers dying after a short time. Time will tell... I sincerely hope mine lasts, as I really like both the looks and the function of this device. Well worth the high price.
